panerai Arktos replica watch

On August 4, 2002, explorer Mike Horn set out on foot from North Cape, Norway to attempt the first solo circumnavigation of the Arctic Circle. With him was a 440-pound sled and, on his wrist, a Panerai watch created specifically for the mission (of which Milan-based Panerai was a sponsor). Panerai equipped the Luminor Arktos watch with a rotating bezel marked with the four cardinal points, thus enabling the watch to serve as a compass. To protect the movement from the effects of magnetic fields that are particularly intense near the North Pole, Panerai installed a layer of soft iron in the case.

More than two years later, on October 21, 2004, Horn returned to North Cape, having completed his arctic trek. He journeyed 12,500 miles, crossing Greenland, Alaska, the Russian Federation, and Norway on foot, skis, kayak and sailboat. He sailed across the Greenland Sea, the Davis Strait, the Bering Strait and the White Sea. He and his watch had endured temperatures as low as -94 degrees Fahrenheit.
In the course of the mission, Horn never took the Panerai off his wrist. "At extreme low temperatures," he says, "everything on me was' frozen and did not work any more. The only thing that continued to work was my watch."
To mark Horn's milestone mission, Panerai has issued the Luminor Arktos in a 500-piece limited series (Ref. PAM00092), with the special bezel and anti-magnetic protection. It has a brushed steel case 44 mm in diameter, independent seconds hand, date window, and rubber strap. On the back is the logo of the Arktos expedition, which shows the globe, Mike Horn's route around the Arctic Circle, and Horn's signature. The movement is a 13-ligne automatic Panerai OP III caliber, COSC-certif ied, with 42-hour power reserve.
To use the bezel as a compass, point the hour hand directly towards the sun. Rotate the bezel so that the index marked N for north is positioned halfway between the hour hand and the 12 on the dial. This indicates the direction of true north.

PANERAI Classic Yachts Challenge Finishes the North American Season in Newport

28th Annual Museum of Yachting Classic Yacht Regatta

NEWPORT, R.I., Aug. 6- As Summer segues into Autumn, the North American chapter of the 2007 Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge comes to a close. The summer's yachting grand finale is the 28th Annual Museum of Yachting Classic Yacht Regatta in Newport. This inspiring classic yachting event brings devotees from near and far to congregate once again at Newport's waterfront.

The Museum of Yachting Classic Yacht Regatta was founded in 1980 by a group of individuals dedicated to preserving and presenting the history of yachting. For 28 years this event has successfully served as an impetus for many classic yacht "rescues" and restorations. Awards are given annually to recognize and encourage the preservation of classic boats, yachting traditions and sportsmanship. In 2005, Panerai founded the Classic Yachts Challenge circuit, and began to link together the world's most prestigious classic yachting events, as the relationship between classic yachts and Panerai horlogerie is strong and simple: Classic yachting and Officine Panerai share a passionate love for the sea and a commitment to quality craftsmanship. Panerai timepieces are built with the highest standards of scientific precision, and like classic boats, they are designed to endure the powerful elements of the sea, while remaining true to tradition and impeccable style. In this, the third year of the Classic Yachts Challenge, Panerai has connected classic yacht owners and crew from around the world, with races in the Northeast USA, Antigua and the Mediterranean.

Friday evening's opening soiree on the Museum grounds will serve as a lovely vantage point for welcoming the participating yachts as they arrive in Newport Harbor. By midday Saturday, the sight will be spectacular -- the harbor and bay fill with spectator and press boats and Newport's many docks and rooftops are speckled with observers as the 80-100 magnificent classic vessels race in Narragansett Bay. Saturday night's celebration is suitably festive with an awards dinner and live music.

As for Sunday, the Classic Yacht Parade is the highlight -- always a fantastically creative display of costume -- and of course awards will be given for Best Sailboat, Best Powerboat, Best Costumes, Most Patriotic Yacht, Most Colorful Yacht and for Best Overall Yacht in Parade.

In addition to being a New England institution, this year's Museum of Yachting Classic Yacht Regatta is also honored to have been selected as a featured event of ISAF's "Sail the World" Centennial Celebration, taking place this same weekend around the globe.

Style: Expanding Time

When it comes to time-pieces, size matters. Tired of squinting at dainty wristwatches, women are embracing bigger models that make a bold statement and are easier to read.
Corum's hand-painted limited-edition Artisan Collection, which features beautifully painted works of art on mother-of-pearl dials (from $29,000), introduces two to four new themes a year, such as brightly colored toucans or Adam and Eve in paradise. The 46mm Classical Billionaire Tourbillon comes in four varieties, including a diamond-and-sapphire bracelet model ($975,000; corum.ch).

One size fits all at Krieger. Its unisex Gigantium family features at least four limited- edition collections with specs up to 51mm. The Fav Elite collection sets a vintage look with bright dial colors and alligator straps to match (from $2,000; kriegerwatch.com).

Panerai, which supplied watches to the Royal Italian Navy in 1864, is now making its sporty Radiomir collection with bright, colorful straps and in bracelet styles. But plenty of women still like the plain model; there is even a waiting list for those seeking the 45mm watch ($9,500; panerai.com).

Gerald Genta's most popular larger model for women is the bold, avant-garde Octo Bi-Retro watch. The triple octagon case with red enamel dial features a dazzling mosaic of black and white diamonds, and comes with a matching zebra-print leather strap. ($64,500; geraldgenta.com)

The enchanting new 38mm Van Cleef & Arpels 18K white-gold Lady Arpels Féerie watch features a fairy whose magic wand and diamond wings track the hours and minutes. Now, if only its spellbinding powers could compel her to be on time ($86,500; vancleef.com).

Panerai Submersible Chronopassion Left-handed Limited Edition

Panerai Submersible Chronopassion

Left-handed Limited Edition

TheWatchProfessionals.com - June 14th, 2006

This is a real event for all the Panerai community. The famous Officine has just delivered the first of its ultra-limited edition (75 examples) of the left-handed Panerai Luminor Submersible “Chronopassion” to the Paris store of the same name. A world first, since Panerai has never before produced an exclusive piece in response to a request from one of its retailers. Here at The Watch Quote we felt we had to share the event with you.
Calling all collectors!

Panerai Luminor Submersible
“Chronopassion”

A truly limited edition

At a time when a number of watch-making brands have succumbed to market temptations and brought “limited editions” of up to 4,000, 5,000, or sometimes even more examples, the Panerai Luminor Submersible Chronopassion, issued in just 75 examples, can only gain in value, in our opinion and course that of collectors, by respecting the criteria of genuine exclusivity.

After months of negotiations between Panera and Laurent Picciotto (Chronopassion Paris) an exclusive series, the “Left-handed Luminor Submersible” has just appeared; a collector’s item given the name PAM00239, that Panerai did not accept to bring out purely by chance.

Worldwide, Laurent Picciotto has to be one of the brand’s distributors who best know Panerai clients, as well as being one of those to whom the brand owes its success. From 1993, when Panerai was only known through private distribution, Laurent Picciotto was one of the first to fall for the Italian Naval combat swimmers’ watch and put it on the market. Since then, he has never ceased to ensure that Panerai is advertised to a prestigious French and international clientele, and Panerai now pays homage to one of its most faithful partners, by signing for Chronopassion a leisure and pleasure watch which will thrill sports watch lovers as well as aficionados of every kind.

Specifics

As well as the features common to all known Panerai Luminor Submersibles, a Luminor Submersible has been produced in a “left-handed” version for the first time, with the legendary Panerai-patented protected winding crown on the left side of the case.

Main characteristics

Case in polished stainless steel AISI 316L Ø 44mm
Lunette in satin-finish stainless steel, unidirectional anti-clockwise swivel with graduated scale to calculate immersion time, and once-per-minute release mechanism
Screwed-in stainless steel back, engraved and numbered.
Mechanical movement with automatic rewind, exclusive Panerai caliber OPIII
Date (at 9 o’clock)
Small second hand (at 3 o’clock)
Water-resistant to depth of 300 meters
Luminous hands

Another important detail: unlike the Luminor Submersible PAM00024, PAM00170, PAM00025, PAM00106 and PAM00199 models, equipped with round luminous indices (appliquéd or painted, depending on the model and production years), the black varnished dial of the PAM00239 is decorated with very attractive appliqued luminous “rod” indices, like those of the second generation Panerai Luminor Submersibles 1000M PAM00087.

A last detail about size: the watch is sold on the Panerai adjustable diver’s bracelet in black and yellow Velcro, that adapts to equally well to the wrist or wetsuit, giving it a fun-loving yet professional character. It also comes with a second exclusive Panerai rubber bracelet with large steel-tongued buckle (pre-Vendôme type), a magnificent adaptation in 44mm of the model originally produced for the limited edition of the Submersible 2500M 47mm PAM00194 of 2004 (Prize for Sports watch of the Geneva year 2005).

All delivered in a superb “Limited Edition” box with the Panerai certificate numbered XX/75.

History of Panerai

Officine Panerai is a luxury italian watch brand. It was founded in 1860 in Florence by Giovanni Panerai (18251897). It later became the official supplier to the royal italian Navy and expanded to building precision instruments. The company is famous for its Radiomir and Luminor watches, notable for their use by italian commando frogmen.

The Florence-based watchmaker produced approximately 300 watches exclusively for the italian marina militare between 1938 and 1993 Cigar Aficionado - Monster Watches How a movie muscleman spawned a trend that bulked up the wristwatch http//www.cigaraficionado.com/Cigar/CA_Archives/CA_Show_Article/0,2322,1416,00.html]. By that time, the company ceased to provide watches to the italian marina militare, as they were no longer cost-effective. The company then moved to launch its products to the civilian market, but remained in relative obscurity until the actor sylvester stallone spotted and bought a Panerai Luminor in a jewellery store in Rome in 1995 to wear during shooting of the film Daylight Cigar Aficionado - Monster Watches How a movie muscleman spawned a trend that bulked up the wristwatch http//www.cigaraficionado.com/Cigar/CA_Archives/CA_Show_Article/0,2322,1416,00.html]. Stallone ordered a small batch of such watches with his signature on the case back, called slytech. He offered them as gifts to friends, including arnold schwarzenegger. The watch gained rapid popularity, and Officine Panerai was eventually taken over by Richemont in 1997.

Among its famous watches, are the historic, Radiomir series, in particular, the Base and the black seal Model which were deemed rare and unknown just a few years ago, but have become highly commercialized recently.

Panerais success with large watches has also led other companies to introduce larger watches, including audemars piguet, IWC and Swatch.

panerai issues special Editions every year. In 2007 they issued the 1936 california dial Radiomir special edition, a reissue of the first panerai model ever presented to the italian marina militare. This model was limited to a run of 1936 units.

Aficionados of Panerai are known as Paneristi, a term coined along the lines of Ferraristi.

Etymology of the surname Panerai

This surname Panerai is typical of the Florence (Firenze) area, and is rarely enountered elsewhere in Italy. It is most probably derived from an old professional name panieraio or paneraio, meaning person who made bread baskets with osiers. Behind the surname forum- [1]
